Upper Back Pain - Possible Causes And Helpful Treatments
Upper back pain is uncomfortable and painful. There are many different reasons for pains to occur in the back area such as poor posture which occurs from not sitting up straight. When continuously slouched it will put a strain on the back muscles, ligaments and bones and ultimately causes pain.
Over exertion from exercise or excessive use of the arms will also cause pain in the back muscles. One of the most popular reasons for pain in the upper back area is doing consecutive movement that the body is not used to, such as playing a long game of tennis or painting a house.
Simple Treatments
Back pain can usually be eased with simple treatments such as a deep massage to the area that is painful. A menthol liniment is also effective in relieving the pain when applied with a light massage. Applying ice packs will relieve the pain and reduce swelling from possible inflammation.
If the pain is severe it may take approximately three days for the pain to subside so if ice packs are being used they should be left on for ten minutes then removed for a couple of hours before reapplying.
Heat is also beneficial and will work best if rotated between cold packs. When doing strenuous tasks take frequent breaks to rest and avoid doing anything that will put strain on the back if it is sore or stiff. Should the pain be the result of poor posture, training yourself to sit and stand straight will relieve the pain.
When To Talk To Your Physician
The aching and upper back pain could be anywhere from mild to severe but, should diminish after a few days of the above treatments.
If the pain continues or is reoccurring, an appointment should be made with a physician to determine if the pain is due to an illness or severe damage to the back.
