Knee Joint Pain – The Most Common Reasons

Knee joint pain is one of the most ordinary reasons why people visit their doctors. The knee is a remarkably multifaceted joint however because knees bear a life-time of body weight and stress they can become painful just from years of ordinary usage.

Knees are complex parts of the body, involving four bones, four main tendons, cartilage, four main ligaments and bursae (fluid-filled sacs), all of which are required to bend, straighten, twist and rotate. Eventually after years of usage the knee cartilage begins to wear down, and once that process begins there is nothing to protect the bones from rubbing against each other and eventually causing knee pain.

Strenuous Activities and Abuse Overtime

Busy people in today’s society enjoy sport activities like jogging, running, tennis, and golf, all of which are hard on knee joints and any injury can result in inflammation and knee-joint pain. Arthritis, which develops after continual abuse of joints over a period of years or a sudden and unexpected injury, may result in pain in the knee joints. Others claim that their knee joint problem sneaks up on them over time and before they know it they have a problem with their knees. Any of these situations can have multiple causes related to the joint pain.

Treatment Available

There are different ways to treat knee joint pain and inflammation before seeing a doctor. Over the counter pain medications like naproxen and ibuprofen relieve pain and are anti-inflammatory while acetaminophen may help the pain but is not anti-inflammatory. Supplements like glucosamine, Celadrin and Celecaine, with Cetylated Fatty Acid (CFA) are also being used with different success levels. None of these is meant to be a permanent solution for pain and in some instances continued use may have long term consequences. Knee-joint pain may not be avoidable but it is definitely treatable.
