Back pain comes in all shapes and sizes. No one is left out. The pain (dorsalgia) usually starts in the nerves, bones, muscles, or other spinal structures. The pain is usually categorized into lower back, upper back, pain of the tail bone or neck pain. These pains can demonstrate themselves in different ways. Many are intermittent, constant, radiating (goes from one area to another), dull, burning, sharp or piercing. Along with the pain, there may be numbness and tingling. Sometimes weakness is a symptom of pain also.

Reasons For Pain In The Back

There are several reasons for pain in the back. One can be muscle tissue pain in the back, such as muscle spasms or muscle strains from pulled muscles. Lower pain can be attributed to the joints in the spine.

Other forms of pain in the back are degenerative disease of the disc, osteoarthritis otherwise known as degenerative joint disease, spinal stenosis, fractures, cancer and inflammatory disease. Sciatica is another source of pain in the back.

Four Classifications Of Pain In The Back

There are four classifications of pain in the back: Cervical or neck pain, Thoracic or upper pain, Lumbar or lower pain and Pelvic or tail bone pain.

Some other ways to classify pain in the back is by duration: acute pain is less than 4 weeks in duration, sub acute pain is 4-12 weeks in duration and chronic pain last longer than 12 weeks.

The Treatments

The treatments for this are different for each case. What works for one may not work for another. The minimal treatment starts with heat therapy, massage or acupressure. Physical therapy sometimes works. Medications may be the answer, such as muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatories and some opiods.

Many addicts begin with pain medicines and quickly become dependent, thus the hesitation in prescribing too many pain medicines. Finally, the last step to back relief is surgery, but this is only performed in approximately 2-10% of patients.

If you have never experienced this pain, it is hard to imagine the discomfort that one may feel. Once you experience this pain, you definitely will not doubt the discomfort that the patient endures.
