The Importance of Arm Workouts – What Are The Psychological Factors?

Arm workouts are an important type of exercise. Exercise and strength go hand in hand. This is especially true if the strength comes in the form of weight lifting and similar body building exercises. One of the most important places to build strength is the arms and upper body in general. There are many reasons for this. Some of those reasons are simply utilitarian. Other reasons involve visual psychological tactics (sex appeal). There have been many studies conducted over the years that have proven a trend in human sociological nature. These studies show how men and women view upper body strength in both genders.

A man will according to these studies look at another man and subconsciously assess his strength and the way in which he must be approached based on the appearance of his upper body. A man with a stronger seeming upper body will often illicit more caution subconsciously from another male in general. A man with a weaker upper body appearance will often find himself lacking as much respect. This lack of strength can be either from the appearance of fat or the "bird chest" syndrome. In the first instance the man is overweight or under-exercised and his arms, chest, and most likely his abdominal area, are all a little flabby. In the second instance he physically has no visual muscle to speak of anywhere on his body.

Women viewing men have been proven in many studies to prefer a more muscular man in regards to upper body strength. The evolutionary psychology of this isn't based on superficial concepts. A man with a stronger upper body equates to a greater capacity to defend himself. This directly correlates with his capacity to defend the female in question. Even the advent of firearms hasn't removed this entirely from social consciousness.

It should be noted, however, that a woman needs to develop her upper body strength as well. Beyond the fact that a stronger upper body allows for increased capacity to perform work and move heavier objects there are psychological factors as well. A woman with a powerful upper body is less likely to get attacked on the street than one that seems to be frail. This is because a powerful upper body seems to actively cause deterrence in individuals that would prey on other human beings. Even if it does not actively deter a would-be attacker a stronger upper body mixed with some martial arts training will allow that same woman to defend herself with much greater capacity.

Some people do not want bulky "man muscle" on their arms and chest. They prefer a sleeker sexier appearance. Arm workouts do not have to be about bulking up. Higher rep work out sets with lower weight work just as well for building strength. They take longer but the muscles do not get as bulky. Another way to avoid over-bulking is to be certain to work every part of the arm including both sides of it equally.
